What happens when a friends-to-lovers romance leads to magic?

Gay Romance, Paranormal, Humor, Mpreg
Word Count: 20,710

Leo thinks asking his soul-splice mate to marry him will be easy, but Dakota says no, again and again. When he finally capitulates, Leo believes happy ever after is in the cards, but Dakota isn’t feeling well, and meddling family members hijack their plans. Neither warlock wants the drama of a large ceremony, but the Conclave gets its way. Witches always do, after all.

When the eventful day arrives, neither man expects their old enemy to raise a demon from Hell to ruin their wedding. Witches can’t stand up to a demon, so the newly wed warlocks must save the day, but not before a surprise revelation leaves Dakota reeling.

Can Leo and Dakota survive a demon, witches, and a grandma intent on embarrassing them both as much as possible? Sadly, even magic can’t guarantee a happy ending…

Teaser Excerpt:

Leo opened the box, took the ring out, and grabbed Dakota’s left wrist. “Put the damn thing on and shut up about it.” He pushed the metal onto Dakota’s ring finger with one swift motion.

Dakota snatched his hand away like a man burned, but it was too late. “Well, shit.” He stared down at his hand. The ring looked good. He liked it. “Fuck you, Leo,” he swore, closing his fingers into a fist. His heart gave a happy thump, but he was careful not to show that on his face.

Leo laughed. “I don’t see you taking it off.”

Dakota hunched his shoulders. “It’s too late now.” He didn’t really want to take it off. He wanted to marry Leo. You are an idiot, he told himself, thinking of his mother and his aunts, and his grandmother. His balls tried to crawl up into his body when he considered just how crazy the Conclave was going to be over this. “You know, there hasn’t been a warlock marriage in five centuries.” He ran his thumb along the ring. His skin tingled. His power liked the outward manifestation of their soul-splice, dammit it all to hell.

“You worry about the Conclave far too much, Dakota.” Leo grabbed him by the elbow and pulled him down the rocky trail. “They’re our family, you know. They’re not going to do anything drastic to us.” He laughed. “They helped us deal with your crazy boss. And they were happy that we got together. You need to let go of this irrational fear of your female relatives.”

Dakota scoffed. “Just you wait, Leo. Tuxes. And flowers. And probably a giant reception with witches from all over the world attending…” He trailed off as visions of seating arrangements rushed through his brain. “My God, it’s going to be a train wreck.” Even the warm weight of the ring on his finger couldn’t comfort him in the face of such a horror.

“Enough.” Leo dragged him up to a tree and pushed him against it. “I’m not really into public exhibition, but I can tell nothing else is going to shut you up,” he muttered.

“What are you—” Dakota broke off as Leo went to his knees, fingers already unfastening his jeans. “Leo, stop that. I’m not in the mood.” Dakota pushed his lover’s hands away, but Leo growled. Dakota’s dick twitched. I’m so fucked, he thought, shivering as Leo nuzzled into the open fly of his pants. Warm breath washed over his balls. “Fuck.” He banged his head on the tree as his cock went from soft and uninterested to hard-as-hell in less than a second.

“No time for that right now,” Leo said, mouthing along Dakota’s dick. “This is going to be quick and dirty.” He looked up, green eyes glimmering with energy. Sparks flared along his skin.

Dakota shoved the heel of his hand into his mouth and bit down, hoping the pain would help him keep his cool. It didn’t work. The moment Leo sucked the tip of his erection into his hot mouth, Dakota moaned. “Oh my God.” He glanced around the forest. He’d thought someone witnessing Leo’s proposal was bad, but this? This was worse. A lot worse.

Not that I’m going to stop him.

“Shh.” Leo licked along the underside, nibbling down the thick vein. “You taste good,” he murmured, kissing at the root.

Dakota shivered. “Anyone might come down the trail. Dammit, Leo.” He tried to make himself draw Leo to his feet, but he couldn’t. He wanted Leo to blow him in the middle of a very public walking trail. He licked his lips. “Suck me. Do it fast.”

Dakota thought moving to a new town for his new job would be easy. He gets to live with his best friend Leo, far from the machinations of his mother and the witches who want his genes. Unfortunately, his new boss keeps hitting on him. Is there nowhere a nice guy can hide from women who want his body?

Leo thinks pretending to be his best friend’s lover will be hilarious. He loves a good joke, and he’s delighted that Dakota finally lives close enough for them to hang out again like they did as kids. So what if they’re not gay? It’s all for a good cause: keep Dakota out of the clutches of a crazy woman.

Neither of them expects their charade to feel so real. How were they supposed to know that one kiss would lead to sex, or that true power comes from love?

Story Excerpt:

“We should practice kissing.” Leo watched Dak’s face carefully. One hint of revulsion and he’d back down. He didn’t want to alienate his best friend. He wanted to help.

Dakota let out a breath. “That was not what I was expecting you to say.”

“What were you expecting?” Leo surreptitiously wiped his hands on his jeans.

“That we should get promise rings or something completely ridiculous.” Dakota flexed his fingers. “Or buy matching pink shirts.” He cocked his head. “Oh, wait. I forgot. You already own a pink shirt.”

Leo scowled. “Pink is a completely functional color.”

“On a construction company boss?”

“No one’s ever said anything to me about it.” Leo defended himself. He liked that particular button-down shirt. He looked good in it.

Dakota snorted. “That’s because even when you wear a pink shirt, you look like you could snap spines in half without breaking a sweat.”

“So what? I work out. Are you going to consider my idea, or not?” Leo asked, trying to head off further talk about his wardrobe. Talking about a pink shirt with his best friend was gay, not owning one.

Dakota sat up. “You were serious?”

Leo nodded. “Of course.” His gaze dropped to his friend’s mouth. He tried to tell himself he was examining Dakota’s lips clinically, for information purposes, but his skin tingled when he considered what it might be like to put his mouth there. “I mean, I’ve never kissed a dude. I have no idea what it’s like.”

Dakota stared at him. “You’re actually serious about this.”

“Have you kissed a guy?” Leo asked, swallowing past an unexpected lump in his throat. If Dakota had kissed a man, he decided he would be pissed because his best friend had never told him about it.

Yeah. That’s totally why.

“No.” Dakota looked away.

“No, you won’t kiss me, or no, you’ve never kissed a dude?” Leo shifted closer. He could smell the last vestiges of Dakota’s cologne, mostly worn off after a day of teaching.

Dakota reached for his water bottle and uncapped it. He took a long swig, then wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.

Leo stared. How in the hell did Dak make that move look so suggestive? His lips were puffy now.

“No, I’ve never kissed a guy,” Dakota said clearly, putting the bottle back down. His blue eyes were almost black in the low light. The sun had set an hour ago, and neither of them had bothered to turn on more than the single lamp near the sofa.

Leo took a deep breath, feeling weirdly wired. The inside of his skull buzzed with static. He couldn’t form a coherent thought right now if someone paid him good money. “Okay, then.”

Dakota quirked an eyebrow. “Okay.” He had a half-smile going on his face.

Leo relaxed minutely when he saw Dakota’s familiar expression. He couldn’t remember how many times that look had dared him into trouble. “You’d better not punch me,” he muttered, reaching up to cup Dakota’s cheeks.

Dakota huffed. “You’d pound me if I tried.”

Leo didn’t answer. He was too busy trying to figure out how to put his mouth in the right spot. For some reason, his body wasn’t obeying him right now. Just get on with it, you idiot, he told himself. His cock had thickened, making his jeans moderately uncomfortable. What the fuck was wrong with him? This was practice, nothing more.

“Oh, for fuck’s sake,” Dakota said, impatiently leaning closer. He kissed Leo on the mouth, light and fast.

His lips feel like pillows. Leo flinched, more at the absurd thought than from the taste of his best friend on his tongue. “Jesus.”

Dakota sat back. “There. Are you happy now? This was your idea.”

He doesn’t seem to have any trouble speaking, Leo thought irritably. “No. I’m not done.” He leaned in, this time grabbing Dak’s face. He kissed him, no fooling around this time. He nibbled on the side of Dakota’s mouth until he gasped, then slid his tongue inside. When Dakota moaned under his breath, Leo shuddered, sliding his hands down his friend’s chest. The bump of Dak’s nipple rings beneath his fingertips made his dick twitch.

“You taste like cinnamon,” he murmured, sucking on Dak’s lower lip. Leo wanted to do a hell of a lot more than suck. He wanted to bite. He sat back, sucking air. What the fuck just happened?

Dakota was staring at him, mouth open and wet.

“Christ.” Leo leaned in again, kissing him savagely. He hauled Dakota over until they fell back onto the couch. Dakota’s breath whooshed out when he fell along Leo’s body, legs on either side. They both froze as their erections brushed each other.

“Oh my freaking God,” Dakota said, shaking. His hands pressed into Leo’s shoulders.

“This isn’t funny. Don’t you dare fucking laugh,” Leo told him, low and vicious. “I can’t fucking think.” He’d never been so turned on in his entire life.

“Do I look like I’m laughing?” Dakota asked, hair a tangled mess. His eyes glittered. “You had your tongue down my throat.” His voice shook.

You look desperate. Leo didn’t say the words out loud, because he still couldn’t breathe. How could he talk when he couldn’t get enough air in his damned lungs? When Dakota’s hips twitched, Leo swallowed. Hard. Dakota’s dick dug into Leo’s hip like a fucking brand. Leo wanted more than a kiss, God help him.

Soul-bruised and bitter, Charlie left the military for peaceful solitude. When he’s mugged at gunpoint, his isolation is shattered, because the guy with the weapon is his mate, and Charlie’s falcon insists on truth: the other half of his soul is a desperate man who doesn’t know he’s a shifter.

Warren has no money for rent, his sister’s ex beat her bloody, and he’s working double shifts to survive. He thought his life couldn’t get any worse, but then he mugs an ex-soldier who somehow turns the tables and offers him something impossible: hope.

Of course, nothing is that simple, and Charlie’s resistance to their bond sabotages their relationship before it really begins. Warren can handle hardship, but now his enemies are bigger than the bully next door, and he’s broken the darkest taboo of the Sky Hunter falcons. Only Charlie can save him, but can a damaged ex-soldier save himself, too?

“I told you not to move. Are you paying attention?”

Wait… Warren frowned. He recognized that voice. “I know you.”

“You have a good memory, Warren.” The cold point slid across his neck and settled on the curve of his shoulder. “Do you remember who I am yet?”

Warren swallowed, but the lump of nerves in his throat didn’t budge. “Charlie.” God help him. He inhaled, wondering what the fuck was wrong with him that he had a hard-on in this situation. I’m finally cracking from all the stress.

“Very good.” The metal weight lifted as Charlie stepped in front of Warren.

Warren stared at the black gun nestled comfortably in Charlie’s hand. Fuck. That looks real.

“Yeah, unlike your toy, this is a real weapon.” Charlie eased the safety down and pointed it at Warren’s thigh. “You’ll feel a hell of a lot more than a splat of water if someone shoots you with it.”

Warren shuddered. He was turned on and more than a little bit nervous. “You wouldn’t really shoot me, would you?” He forced himself to look Charlie in the eyes. “I’m sorry I was such an idiot the other night. I was desperate, but that doesn’t excuse what I tried to do.” From the expression on Charlie’s face, Warren wasn’t sure his apology did much good. Charlie’s cold blue eyes stared back at him with no hint of the man’s thoughts. “I would never do anything like that again.”

“Sorry.” Charlie finally snorted. “Sorry doesn’t even begin to cover what I want from you.” He pursed his lips. The muzzle of his gun stayed fixed on Warren’s thigh.

Warren didn’t know a damn thing about guns, but he knew it would hurt if that thing shot him. Even so, he couldn’t keep his gaze from drifting down Charlie’s body. The man wore tight jeans, black boots, and a t-shirt that hugged every muscle in his torso. Warren wanted to put his hands on that chest, gun be damned. He wanted more than the desperate existence he seemed to be mired in, and had been ever since his parents died. He wanted Charlie. He waited a moment to see if the thought of being attracted to another guy bothered him, but all he felt was a sense of urgency. He needed to adjust his erection, but he had a feeling Charlie wouldn’t take it all that well if he reached down. He gritted his teeth and didn’t move. “What do you want from me?” His voice came out rough.

“On your knees.” Charlie gestured with the gun’s point.

Jesus. Warren slid to the ground and looked up. Charlie’s face had gone taut. “Please don’t shoot me.” Warren’s hands clenched into fists when Charlie tightened his finger on the trigger. After what they’d done together in the woods last night, Warren would’ve never expected this. Never. Charlie just hadn’t seemed the type. But you never know when someone might snap.

“You think I’m going to shoot you?” Charlie raised an eyebrow.

“I have no idea what you’re going to do,” Warren replied shakily. He wasn’t sure if he was more frightened or aroused. His erection pressed uncomfortably against the zipper of his jeans.

“Undo my pants,” Charlie said.

Warren froze. “What?” Was he serious? He looked at Charlie’s groin. His cock was long and thick and obviously hard behind the denim. He’d been trying not to stare, but that was pretty difficult from this position. He swallowed nervously.

“You heard me. Don’t fuck around, Warren. I am totally out of patience.” Charlie put the gun to Warren’s forehead. He didn’t look like he was in the mood for more talking. He looked like a man on the edge of losing his temper.

Warren’s heart pounded. Was it rape if what he was being forced to do was something he actually wanted? “I don’t—” He broke off sweating. His hands trembled as he raised them. Don’t be a pussy, he told himself. His own erection swelled even more, and the position he was in didn’t make his arousal particularly comfortable.

“Wait.” Charlie let out a soft breath when Warren’s fingers reached his zipper. “Stop.”

Confused, Warren slid a finger inside Charlie’s waistband. The gun still pressed into his forehead. “I don’t know what you want from me,” he whispered, not sure if he was disappointed or angry.

Charlie lifted the gun away and pointed it at the ground. His finger tightened on the trigger, and the weapon clicked. “It’s empty.” His eyes were completely dark now. Dark and feral. “I would never hurt you.”

Warren had never seen anything so beautiful as those eyes, but that didn’t change what had just happened. He frowned as the first trickle of rage slid down his spine. “You fucking threatened me with an empty gun?” He clenched the waistband of Charlie’s pants with his fingers. “That’s so frigging messed up.” He told himself to get the fuck up, but his body wasn’t listening. I should punch him, he thought, but Charlie hadn’t moved, either. Warren slid his fingers deeper into Charlie’s pants. When the tips of his fingers touched Charlie’s cock, he sighed. “Fuck.”

Charlie trembled. “Yeah, that about sums it up.”

Warren undid the button, then drew the zipper down. “I want to blow you. You’re an asshole, but I still want this.” He licked his lips, ignoring Charlie as the older man dismantled the weapon and put the pieces on the table. Warren hardly cared. He felt like he stood on the edge of a precipice, prepared to jump. All his worries about his sister and her bastard ex, the rent, and his job faded to nothing. Some wild instinct stuck inside his bones told him to take the leap, and for once in his life, Warren was going to fly. Instinct was never a good way to make decisions—the disaster with the mugging had taught him that—but he didn’t give a shit right now. He wanted Charlie.

“It’s only fair that you return the favor,” Charlie said, startling him. “I went on my knees for you last night.”

Warren looked up. Charlie’s teeth were clenched.

“Suck it.”

After years in the military, Wulfgang Marrok has had enough. He wants nothing more than to settle down into quiet normalcy and live out his life. Unfortunately, the moment he meets his music history professor, normal and quiet disintegrate beneath a sudden metaphysical connection he didn’t think was possible. His mother is a werewolf, but he didn’t inherit her abilities… until now.

Silas River desperately needs a break from life as Bad Oak’s drummer, so he dons a disguise and heads to a sleepy little town to teach music. Of course, life always fouls up the beat: the moment his fated mate walks into his classroom, his dormant wolf side wakes up and demands attention.

For shifters, instinct trumps solitude. Werewolf politics and violent enemies trump peace. Can Silas and Wulfgang’s new bond survive murder and a loss so deep that Silas almost destroys himself trying to soothe the pain?

Story Excerpt:

Wulfgang closed the front door behind him and followed his professor to the bath. Forest flicked on a light, illuminating slate tile floors and a gorgeous granite-topped vanity.

“There. Sit on the edge of the tub,” Forest said, rummaging around in the cabinet above the sink.

“This isn’t a tub. It’s a freaking pool,” Wulfgang said, perching on smooth tile. “How the hell can you afford this?” He smoothed a hand over the edge of the tub. “You’re a teacher. Last I checked, you guys make enough to buy one cup of coffee maybe every other week and that’s about it.”

“I have my ways,” Mr. Sexy Professor said, dropping to his knees in front of Wulfgang.

Holy shit. Wulfgang caught his breath. Forest had popped out his blue contacts while he’d been gawking at all the tile and intense hazel eyes looked up at him. “Your eyes…” He trailed off as that sense of familiarity that had been dogging him for the past two weeks punched him in the gut. “Christ, you look familiar.” His cock pressed against the front of his jeans painfully. He wanted to grab the professor and mess him up until they were both desperate and dirty and very fucking satisfied. He clenched his hands into fists so he wouldn’t do something stupid.

Forest snorted. “They itch after wearing them all day, and since you already know they’re fake…” He shrugged. “Now hold still. This might hurt a little.” He reached up with a wet cotton ball.

Wulfgang leaned back. “What the fuck is that?”

“Peroxide. Don’t be a baby, Wulfgang.”

The professor reached out again, and this time Wulfgang let him get close. He hissed at the sting. “Ow.”

Forest pressed harder.

“Wow, you’re actually kind of mean,” Wulfgang said. Somehow, the pain in his temple didn’t help dispel his erection one bit. Probably because you have the sexiest man you’ve ever seen on his knees between your legs. He wished he could reach down and adjust himself, but that would definitely give his body’s condition away. As it was, he could still pretend that Sexy Professor had no idea how badly Wulfgang wanted him.

“My brother and cousins would agree with you. I have no mercy for the weak.” Forest blotted with the cotton, then ripped open two bandages. “Hold still.”

“I’m already holding still.” Wulfgang’s mouth had gone dry. He gripped the side of the tub surround like it would keep him from falling. Forest was close enough that the warmth of his body felt like a whisper against his skin. “Fuck, it’s hot in here,” he whispered.

Forest smoothed the bandages down over Wulfgang’s face. His fingers lingered just a tad longer than they needed to. “No, it’s not. Not with the air conditioner on.” He touched a thumb to Wulfgang’s lips. “You’re hot,” he said softly.

Hell. I want him bad. Wulfgang blinked as his mouth tingled. “What?”

Forest sat back on his haunches. “You can’t tell when a guy is making a pass at you?”

Wulfgang’s nostrils flared. Forest smelled like, well, a fucking forest. He smelled like home. “Why do you smell like pine trees?” He frowned. “And electricity?”

“Damn, you have no clue,” the professor said, and then he leaned up and kissed Wulfgang full on the mouth.

Wulfgang flailed for a moment. Then he sank his hands into Forest’s hair and held on. Mr. Sexy Professor knew exactly what he was doing. He kissed like a soldier on a mission: deep, hard, and intent on reaching his goal, which in this case felt like he was trying to drive Wulfgang over the edge in three point two seconds. Wulfgang shuddered and kissed him back, licking inside the man’s mouth. His head still hurt, but the pain paled in comparison to the inferno raging inside his body. He fisted one hand in Forest’s hair, then used the other to drag him closer. When the professor’s chest collided with Wulfgang’s cock, both men groaned.

“You taste like berries,” Forest gasped.

Wulfgang bit the man’s lip, inexplicably angry. And really turned on. “You’re no fucking professor, are you?”

Forest laughed. “Hmm, not quite.” He slid his hands up over Wulfgang’s thighs and pushed his thumbs into the crease where his legs met his torso.

Wulfgang’s dick jumped, wanting those clever fingers closer.

“My name isn’t Forest, either.”

Christ. Wulfgang grabbed the front of the ugly, oversized t-shirt cloaking Forest like a freaking burqa and yanked it off. Forest didn’t protest. When he was bare, Wulfgang’s gaze landed on the huge tree tattoo decorating the man’s right arm and shoulder. It lay on thick muscles like a damned signpost, mercilessly poking at Wulfgang’s memory. “Fuck. Who the hell are you?” He slapped a hand over the tattoo, then squeezed, relishing the solid reality of the man in front of him. Something wild surged through him. He wanted to bite this guy, this liar who kneeled in front of him and had the balls to drag him home and try to fix him. He bared his teeth.

Instead of running, like any sensible person would do, the professor snarled back at him and tipped his head slightly to the side. “Come on. Do it. I know you want to.”

Reclusive artist Rufus Ward’s house needs repair, but he hates demolition and dust. However, when handyman Harry Hande rings his doorbell, Rufus lets him in—he’s everything the famous painter likes in a man: young, sexy, and somewhat confused about his sexuality. Rufus thought he was done with dating, but Harry is hot enough to push him from loneliness into love.

Harry’s sensible demeanor disguises desperation. His brother is a jerk and he needs to move out, but his fledgling business isn’t quite ready to support him. Rufus is supposed to be just another client, but when they meet, all of Harry’s preconceived notions of attraction are demolished. Lust launches him into the dare of a lifetime. Will letting Rufus draw him nude destroy him, or will his true nature come out?

Story excerpt:

“No, don’t be sorry. I started it when I flirted with you. I shouldn’t have flown off the handle.” Rufus flicked his pencil across the floor. “And now I’ve killed the mood entirely.”

Harry took a deep breath. “Not entirely.” His heart banged against his ribs. He felt like he was in a fast car driving for the edge of a cliff.

Rufus looked at him. “Oh?”

Harry lifted a shoulder. “I was curious. And I’m kind of being an ass because I had a weird day. That’s on me.”

“Hmm.” Rufus narrowed his eyes. “Are you still curious?” He stood up.

Harry stared at him. How could one man suddenly look so much bigger? He dropped his eyes nervously, fixing his gaze on a small hole in his jeans near his knee. He really should retire this pair. It would be bad to give clients the wrong impression if they thought he didn’t care about his appearance…

“Curious enough to play?”

Rufus’s voice was much closer. God, grow a pair, Harry. He forced himself to look up. The artist he’d admired for years stood right next to his chair. Loomed, actually. Rufus’s crotch was at face level and Harry knew that bulge was every bit as real as his own impossible-to-ignore erection.

“Yeah,” he said, looking up Rufus’s body.

The artist smiled at him, green eyes darkening. “Touch me. No more screwing around.”

Harry frowned. “What?”

Rufus dropped to his knees and put both hands on Harry’s thighs. “Touch me.”

Harry almost stopped breathing as the warmth from Rufus’s palms penetrated the thin denim. “Where?”

“Jesus, Harry. You’re a real piece of work, aren’t you?” Rufus shook his head and leaned in, brushing Harry’s cheek with his lips. “Fucking kiss me.” He leaned back and licked his lips. “I promise I won’t bite.”

God help me, I want him to bite. Harry’s hands shook as he gripped Rufus’s forearms and dragged him close. “This is nuts.”

Rufus laughed, and then he was kissing Harry, aggressive and perfect. The man didn’t beat around the bush. Harry moaned as peppermint burst across his tongue and then somehow Rufus’s hands were in his hair, holding tight. “Fuck,” Harry said. He couldn’t breathe. He couldn’t move.

“Maybe,” Rufus said, then dove in again, nipping at Harry’s lips. “You taste like cherries.”

“I was eating candy in the car,” Harry said, voice cracking when Rufus slid his lips down his jaw. “You taste like mint.”

“I like sweet things,” Rufus said, licking Harry’s neck.

“Fuck.” Harry gripped Rufus’s biceps and pushed him back. “Stop. I’m not sweet.”

Rufus paused. “You’re blowing hot and cold, Harry.” He turned his hands over and gripped Harry’s forearms, hard.

Harry flushed. “I don’t know what I want.”

“You’re hot and bothered, and you don’t know why the fuck you’re feeling that way about another man.” Rufus leaned in and kissed him quick and hard. “I get it.”

He doesn’t know me. Harry gritted his teeth, thinking about the anger on his brother’s face as they’d argued that morning. Fuck it. “I’ve had dreams about making out with a guy.”

Rufus smiled. “I figured.”

Harry flushed again. “Fuck you.”

Abruptly, Rufus tipped over Harry’s chair, sending him backward to the floor. Harry didn’t even have time to yell before Rufus was on top of him, pushing into him. “You think I wouldn’t fuck you, Harry?” Rufus ground his absurdly hard cock against Harry’s thigh. “I would. I absolutely would.”

Prince Ryuu hates his father, Emperor Midian. When he’s forced to buy a slave, he defiantly chooses Drakon instead of a woman. Because he’s determined to overthrow his father’s empire, he can’t afford to show vulnerability, but Drakon is more compelling than he’d anticipated. For an Arethuza warrior, affection is a weakness that can lead to death.

Drakon isn’t really a slave—he’s a black dragon, considered cursed by everyone. Despite his people’s distrust, he will do anything to keep them safe, even submit to an Arethuza prince. He never expected to find love, and that complication could ruin his plans to sabotage the emperor’s war campaign. Though Ryuu is his fated mate, their fledgling bond is a secret too dangerous for Drakon to reveal.

Will their duty tear them apart? Can honor prevail in a war that might be too violent for even the strongest dragon warrior?

Story excerpt:

Drakon lay in bed, listening to Ryuu breathing as he slept. He’d tried to relax, but after the prince threatened to kill him, he’d found sleep impossible. He is right. He could kill you whenever he wants, he thought, depressed. Even shifting to dragon form wouldn’t immediately help. He was trapped beneath the surface of a desert, in a citadel made of granite, among corridors filled with Arethuza warriors. He might be able to kill Ryuu, but he would not be able to escape. As a dragon, he was too large to fit in the underground passages. As a man, he was outnumbered hundreds to one. So he lay in bed, wondering how he could possibly still be aroused, in this situation, and right after Ryuu had threatened to end his life.

“I can hear you thinking,” Ryuu said, rolling over.

Drakon sighed.

“I didn’t say I would kill you tonight.” Ryuu poked him in the arm. “Go to sleep. You’re keeping me awake.”

“You may be my master, but even you cannot conquer insomnia,” Drakon said dryly.

Ryuu leaned over and switched on a low light. Drakon glanced at him. His hair was mussed, making him look more human and less princely. Drakon bit back a groan as he felt his cock swell even more. Stop this. You are lucky he didn’t chain you to the floor.

“This is not just insomnia,” Ryuu said, lying back down.

Drakon pressed his lips together. He was not about to confess his need for release to the man who owned him.

“Tell me about your family,” Ryuu said.

My family? Drakon thought, disturbed. “You want me to tell you about the people I will likely never see again in my lifetime?” He paused, thinking about his father, General Ozuru. His father’s last words to him before he’d left had not been kind. He wondered what Ryuu would think if he knew that Drakon was the heritor to the Soutx Nation. He sighed softly to himself. What he once was didn’t matter now. He’d vowed to stop the Arethuza’s blood war, and he would do so, even if it meant surrendering his honor to save his people. “Is that a command?”

Ryuu sighed. “Perhaps I spoke hastily.”

Drakon snorted quietly.

“Tell me about your first lover, then. What was she like?” Ryuu asked.

Drakon’s face burned. Of all the things for the prince to hit upon. Should I confess? Put us out of our misery? He considered it, shifting slightly as his cock throbbed even more. What do I have to lose? He swallowed, then licked his lips. “His name was Ikale.”

Ryuu went perfectly still as the meaning of Drakon’s words sank into his mind. “He?”

Drakon stirred. “Yes.”

Ryuu’s hands fisted beneath the silk blanket as the arousal he’d fought so hard to keep from Drakon flared back to life. He thought Drakon would talk about some pretty girl, or some silly fumblings as a young teen, but instead he’d admitted to Ryuu the one thing he desired more than anything else. Well, almost anything. I still wish to be free of my father’s bloodthirsty fascination with war. I still wish to set my people free of him.

“Why didn’t you tell me earlier?” he asked Drakon.

“What good would it have done to admit my orientation? What good does it do now?” Drakon sounded frustrated. “My people aren’t any more accepting of same-sex unions than yours.”

“We could both get some pleasure out of this necessity,” Ryuu said, trying to mask the desperation he felt.

Drakon shifted again. “You are my owner.” He spat the words as if they were bugs in his mouth. “You can just take what you want from me, any time you please.”

Ryuu closed his eyes, regretting the threats he’d given Drakon earlier. “I am not any more free of you than you are of me. I explained that to you.”

“I should kill you, right now,” Drakon murmured sulkily.

Ryuu laughed. “Even if you could, why would you? Killing me would only hasten your own death. You are surrounded by the enemy.” He smoothed the blankets over his thighs. “No. You have your own reasons for submitting to slavery. Don’t think I am unaware of that.”

Drakon sighed. “Perhaps I’d rather be dead than subject to this.”

Ryuu bit his lip. He would not be the one to initiate this. He would likely have to do far too many distasteful things to Drakon in the days ahead as it was. The least he could do was let his slave make this one choice. “I will not force you, not in the night, when it is just the two of us,” he said quietly.

“You would force me in public?”

Ryuu rubbed his face, exasperated. “I may need to make a show of it, though I will do everything I can to keep that from happening.”

Drakon rolled over. Ryuu jerked when he felt a hand on his arm. He opened his eyes. Drakon loomed over him, dark hair sliding down over his shoulders. “Ikale was a handsome boy, dark of hair and with flashing eyes. I first noticed him when I was thirteen. He’d come with his father to visit. We were thrown together often, during lessons and while practicing our combat skills.”

“How did you become intimate?” Ryuu asked, almost afraid that Drakon would refuse to tell him.

Instead, Drakon smiled. “We went camping in the wilderness together. The first night, we couldn’t get a fire started. We huddled together when the temperature dropped.”

“I’ve heard that the mountains can be very cold,” Ryuu offered.

“As cold as the desert,” Drakon said quietly. He rearranged himself on the bed so that he leaned closer to Ryuu. “When I woke in the middle of the night, I realized that Ikale and I were so entwined, I could not extricate myself without giving away my feelings. So I held perfectly still.” He sighed, his warm breath a puff against Ryuu’s skin. “He woke up. He felt my erection.”

Ryuu’s cock hardened even more as Drakon described his arousal with the other boy. “What happened?”

Drakon leaned closer, going down onto his side. “He touched me. We used our hands on each other.” He looked away. “A week later, he and his father left. Many years later, I heard he’d died fighting in a battle with the Arethuza.”

Ryuu flinched. “I’m sorry.”

“It happened a long time ago.” Drakon reached out and slid his hand down Ryuu’s arm. “Touch me, Ryuu.” He sounded almost frightened, which surprised Ryuu. Thus far, the slave had been by turns defiant and resigned. Why would this unsettle him so?

Ryuu’s breathing quickened. “Are you certain?”

Drakon lifted Ryuu’s hand and dragged it down his chest.

Ryuu savored the feel of Drakon’s hair and soft skin. When Drakon used Ryuu’s fingers to stroke his cock, Ryuu shuddered. The heat of Drakon’s erection seemed to sear his palm.

“What we do tonight means nothing,” Drakon whispered roughly, letting go and sliding his hand between the plackets of Ryuu’s robe. “This is release. Not love. Those are my terms.”
