YTSS   BookBoyfriendBen

When a meteor explodes over Atlanta, infecting the world with a virus that turns people into zombies, Lark knows survival will be difficult. Her roommate and best friend insists that her father and his best friend will come and save them, but Lark isn’t sure if she wants to put her life into the hands of strangers. Unfortunately, when the zombies come, she may have no choice. And when Ben and Dillon break into their dorm in the nick of time, Lark finds herself reevaluating her insistence on independence.

Tragedy brings them together. The fight to survive creates a bond stronger than blood in a few short days. What’s a girl to do when faced with the zombie apocalypse? Does she trust in the two men she knows will keep her alive, or does she strike out on her own?

Why is Ben Greene my book boyfriend? Read on to find out:

Erin: So, Ben, you saved Lark from the zombies. Does being a hero come naturally to you?

Ben: No, are you kidding? I’m not a hero. I’m not anyone’s hero. But I couldn’t let her die. Not after she’d tried so hard to save my daughter, Olivia.

Erin: When did you realize that Lark and Dillon were falling for you? Did you know what was happening?

Ben: I didn’t, not at first. I mean, Lark was so much younger than me, I couldn’t believe what I was feeling for her, let alone deal with what she was feeling for me. As for Dillon, well, that was a total surprise. I never expected to feel like that about another man.

Erin: Do you regret loving Lark? Or Dillon?

Ben: No. Never. There are so few of us left now, love is precious no matter where you find it.

Erin: What about the zombies? Where did you learn how to use a machete like that?

Ben: *laughing* I didn’t take zombie killing lessons, if that’s what you mean. I do what I need to survive and protect my family.

Erin: Lark seems pretty capable of protecting herself. So does Dillon.

Ben: Doesn’t matter. Everyone needs backup. The stronger we are, the longer we’ll live.

Erin: What about happily ever after?

Ben: *long pause* I’m happy now, as ridiculous as that sounds. Even if I die tomorrow, I’ll have lived knowing that I loved the best that I could.

Story Excerpt:

Lark swam out of her dream, warm and comfortable, the way she hadn’t been for weeks. She hadn’t been able to really rest since the meteor exploded over Atlanta, destroying her life and everyone else’s. She remembered falling asleep. She remembered Dillon taking off his boots and settling into bed. She remembered Ben in the chair. She could feel Dillon in front of her, sleeping. She breathed in slowly, too relaxed to move, and then unexpectedly, lips touched the back of her neck. She gasped, tension tightening her spine as she realized there was an arm around her waist. It had to be Ben. Olivia’s dad was in bed behind her.

He kissed her nape again, mumbling sleepily. Heat shot through her as he tightened his arm around her waist. His hot, strong body pressed up against her back. Holy shit, she thought, not sure what to do. She licked her lips, knowing he was still asleep. When Dillon shifted onto his side in front of her, she took a deep breath, all kinds of heated thoughts going through her head. Do I wake them up? Go back to sleep? She didn’t think she could fall back to sleep, not now anyway. Her skin was overheated and she pushed the covers down a little.

Dillon sighed, eyes closed. God, he has pretty eyelashes, she thought, like a ninny. Her eyes dropped to his lips. They were pink and full and for some reason, he looked a lot younger when he was sleeping. Her hand was right near his cheek and she almost touched him, but then Ben moved slightly, distracting her. Reminding her that another equally hot man had his hands on her. She bit her cheek, trying not to move, but his hips shifted closer.

Holy fuck, he has an erection, she thought, shocked for a split second. She closed her eyes, wondering again what the hell she should do, when Dillon moved closer and put his hand on her cheek. Her eyes snapped to his. Dark eyes looked steadily at her, mysterious in the dim room. Damn. He wasn’t asleep at all.

“Dillon,” she whispered thickly.

“Shh,” he said, moving in.

She couldn’t move if she wanted to. She watched him get closer and then his lips touched hers in the gentlest kiss of her life. The best kiss of my life, she thought, skin going hot. She’d long ago decided to repress and deny the fumbling, awkward make-out sessions she’d had with her single high school boyfriend. She wondered if Dillon could tell that she was a twenty-two year old virgin. He smiled and opened his eyes.

“So sweet,” he murmured, thumb moving over her lips.

He can’t tell how bad I am at this, she thought, bemused. Should she tell him? How could she possibly explain? After her parents died, she’d been too damn busy trying to feed herself and save for college to screw around. There’d been no time for dating. No time for boyfriends. And even if I had the time, I wanted it to be special.

Dillon kissed her again, just as gentle as the first time.

Lark’s breath hitched. She was tired of waiting for the perfect moment. And she’d probably not live very long, given the state of the world right now. The sudden realization of how much she wanted this shocked her to her bones.

When Dillon moved back, she forced herself to speak, shoving her uncomfortable emotions down. “Do you and Ben do this often?”

He chuckled. “No. We certainly don’t.”

Ben moved behind her again, pressing his cock into her ass in a way that made her want more. A lot more. She shuddered.

“But I’m feeling kind of awful, tonight,” Dillon continued, moving back a little. His expression was sad. “I want to remember what it’s like to be alive.” He stroked a finger down her cheek.

Lark frowned. “You are alive,” she said, as if mere words could fix him.

He shook his head and moved in for another kiss. She opened her mouth this time, kissing him back tentatively. He groaned, pushing closer. Lark grabbed his shoulders, feeling overwhelmed. When Ben suddenly woke up behind her, his body going still, she knew it was too late to say no. Not that I want to. I really want them. All her instincts were telling her to grab hold of this moment and revel in it, because the three of them might not survive past tomorrow. What use was waiting anymore?

“Lark,” Benedict said, his voice a low murmur. He’d gone still, but hadn’t moved away. She could feel him watching her and Dillon kiss.

“It’s okay,” she whispered when Dillon finally let her up for air.

Ben groaned. “You’re my daughter’s friend. God, this is so wrong.” His hips twitched.

“I’m twenty-two,” she said, hips twitching. “Not a child.”

He trembled, the arm around her waist like iron. She ran her hand across it, reveling in his strength. He was so very hot.

“Jesus,” he breathed, hips jerking.

Lark swallowed, throwing her head back. Dillon’s eyes were a dark glitter. He watched her put an arm up behind her head, around Ben’s neck, then he kissed down her collarbone. She cried out, needing more, and Ben thrust against her ass, all heat and instinct.

“God,” she said, voice thick with need. “Dillon—”

“Shh. Don’t speak,” he murmured, slipping the neck of her tank top down until her right breast peeked out. Olivia’s locket dangled lower and Dillon stared at it for a split second before closing his mouth over the tip of her nipple, nibbling until she arched her back.

Benedict Greene, Ben to his friends, stared at the ridiculously beautiful woman holding the bat over her head. She had light blond hair cut in funky chunks so that it slid over her shoulders as she moved. Her light grey eyes snapped with bravado and he could tell by the way she held the bat that she wasn’t afraid to use it. The fact that she was tiny didn’t seem to faze her at all. Good lord, she barely comes up to my shoulder, he thought, smiling tentatively at her. She wasn’t a zombie, thank God, but she also she wasn’t his daughter. “Are you Lark?” he asked, knowing his daughter’s roommate had holed up with her. In fact, he was pretty certain the only reason Olivia was still alive was because her roommate had an innate instinct for survival. He’d figured that out after numerous phone conversations with Olivia.

She slowly lowered the bat. “Mr. Greene?”

Benedict stared at her, trying to think. He was so damn tired, and the woman in front of him was so freaking beautiful.

“Mr. Greene is a little formal for the zombie apocalypse, don’t you think?” his best friend Dillon said from behind him, saving him from being a total idiot, like usual.

The woman’s eyes snapped to his best friend and she lifted her eyebrows. “You must be ‘Uncle Dillon,’” she said, the fingers on her bat twitching as if she wanted to use air quotes to emphasize her statement. She refused to let go of the weapon, though. He liked that. She was plucky.

“Call me Ben,” he said, scraping his wits off the ground.

“I’m Lark. Lark Stone, Olivia’s roommate,” she said, stepping back. She looked around, then studied him and Dillon closely.

She must be checking we aren’t infected, Ben thought approvingly.

The moment they’d stepped through the door, she began shoving at a huge entertainment center, trying to get it back across the entrance. She looked like David fighting Goliath. He couldn’t believe she’d managed to move the thing all by herself.

“Leave it off,” he said. “We’ll be heading out again soon enough. Is Olivia okay?” He’d managed to keep it together all through the hellish ride here, but now he wanted to see his daughter. He might have been way too young to have a kid when she was born, and he might not have been able to see her as often as he’d liked when she was growing up because of her mom, but he loved her, regardless. He needed to know Olivia was okay.

She narrowed her eyes at him, but left off shoving at the furniture. “She’s fine. This way.” She pivoted and led the way down the hall.

Ben glanced at Dillon and caught his friend looking at her ass. He shoved at him, giving him a look.

Dillon shrugged, smiling, then turned to scan the hall behind them. Ben was having a hard enough time dealing with his sudden and completely unwanted attraction to his daughter’s friend himself. The last thing he needed was for Dillon to be just as stupid.

Running into the unknown. Naked.

IMG_2408

I have a WIP page here on my website (Work in Progress) that I use to keep you kind of up to date on what I’m doing, but it doesn’t really encompass the sheer insanity of my life this year. I’ve written eight distinct works so far as Erin M. Leaf and Marie E. Blossom, and it’s only June. That’s two short stories, and six novels (some were 30,000+ words and some were 50,000+ words long). My favorite story is my worst seller. The novel I was most nervous about is one of my best sellers.

I have no idea what I’m doing.

I think, in order to understand what it is like to be a writer, you need to imagine you’re in a dream. You’re on a boat and the ocean is vast, beautiful, and treacherous. It’s nighttime and the stars are incredibly bright. You can’t stop looking at them, because you’re trying to figure out where you are. You never do. Instead, you befriend a dolphin for a little while and tell her story. Then you find an island where there is nothing but sand, and you tell the story of the lone turtle sleeping on the shore. You cast off again, and follow a reef, telling the story of the coral. Eventually you end up on another island, except this one is a continent and you head into the forest to explore. You tell the story of a mountain lion, a frog, and the mist. This continues….

forever.

You never find out where you are going, but you remember where you have been. You have no tools except for your mind itself. You are exposed all the time and you must use your wits to ignore the weirdness of having your soul visible.

If you spend too much time second-guessing yourself and obsessing over what is happening to you, you end up frozen, like a zombie with its strings cut. The zombie gets eaten very quickly because anything unmoving in this dreamscape is food. The world eats you.

That is what writing feels like to me.

I love it. Even though it’s scary.

This Story Is Actually a Tragedy

Why do writers kill their characters?

I know none of us likes to contemplate such horror, but it happens. Happily, the romance genre is known for its persistent HEA (happily ever after) endings, so I tend to read a lot of romance novels. My motto is: life already sucks massively, why would I want to read about horrible shit when I don’t have too? I want the books I read to entertain me. I don’t want them to be real. That’s why I get so angry when authors kill off beloved characters. Why do they do that?

  1. Boredom: I am so sick of writing about so-and-so and her issues. I want her to die in a fire. Slowly.
  2. Laziness: Hey, wait! I know an easy way to add conflict! Let’s kill off the heroine and see what happens!
  3. Hatred: I hate that character. Where did she come from? What is my inner psyche trying to tell me? You know what? I don’t care. She’s dead. *evil laugh*
  4. Planning: I don’t care how much this character has grown or how many readers love her. I planned to kill her way back when, and by damn, I’m going to do it!
  5. Wickedness: Ha! Everyone likes so-and-so. Lemme burn her house down and then have her drown in a flood! That’ll be hilarious!
  6. I’m a Better Writer Than This Series: Sorry everyone, I don’t care how much you like Sherlock Holmes, I want to write literary fiction (as if anyone actually reads such snobbish prose).
  7. Just Like Real Life: Not everyone survives a crashed car, tornado, war, etc. And how else to explore the emotional impact of such a thing? Kill off a secondary character and see how the main character deals.
  8. This Story Is Actually a Tragedy: Oh, right. There are other genres instead of romance novels! And people die in those books, usually because they are stupid. Romeo and Juliet still has the capacity to enrage me beyond reason.
  9. Zombies: Everyone dies. Hilariously. Probably because no one was smart enough to stockpile flame throwers and shotguns.
